It’s easy to get confused by all of the digital marketing terminology and jargon flying around these days. It can also be difficult to know what each term means. There are so many acronyms in the marketing world like CAC, CPC or SSM to name a few. 

So, here’s an attempt to make it a bit easier for you to understand the lingo and how they relate to each other.

SEM Search Engine Marketing – A plan or strategy to increase the visibility of a website. With aim to increase traffic and increase sales.

SEO Search Engine Optimisation – The process of improving the visibility of a website or webpage in search engines like Google and Bing. This involves using various tactics to improve the ranking and positioning in the search engine results page(SERP)

SMM Social Media Marketing – Marketing strategy to use social media sites to market products or services.

CAC Customer acquisition cost – The average cost of acquiring a new customer.

SERP Search engine results page – The results page given to a person putting in a search term into a search engine. Generally the higher you are positioned in the SERP the more likely you are to receive organic click throughs.

CLV Customer lifetime value – How much revenue a customer has generates your business. Also referred to as LVC lifetime customer value.

CTR Clickthrough rate – The percentage of clicks from a advertising campaign relative to the number of impressions.

CPC Cost per click – The cost everytime someone clicks on a paid advertising campaign.

PPC Pay Per Click – Internet advertising payment model. What you agree to pay when a user clicks on your ad on search engines like Google, Bing or Yahoo. 

ROI Return on investment – Percentage of returns made from a set investment. This can be a hard figure to determine.

Bounce rate – Google terminology for the percentage of visitors that do not take no further action once landing on a website. High bounce rates can damage your position in the search results.

Impression – How many time  your piece of content has been shown to potential visitors.

Conversion Rate – The percentage of customers/ potential customers, that take a specific action you have designed.

CTA Call to Action – A prompt to try and instigate an immediate response or encourage a purchase.

A/B Testing – Two different versions of the same thing. For example two different home pages with slightly different words or CTA buttons. This offers a way to test and measure for effectiveness of both options.

CMS Content management system – Simple way of creating a website and publishing new content for example wordpress.

CRM Customer relationship management – A system to manage relationship with its customers.

Inbound Marketing – Create content for content marketing or social media marketing content.

Outbound Marketing – Pushing messages to potential customers like trade shows.

CRO Conversion Rate Optimisation – Increasing conversion percentages from a website.

SMO Social Media Optimization – Using social media to manage and grow a online business presence.
